All these bodies offer information on grants, awards and bursaries for writers.


Booktrust
Publishes an information sheet on Grants, Awards and Bursaries for Writers.

Association of Charitable Foundations

Publishes guides for those seeking grants to study and how to apply to a charitable trust or foundation.

The Arts Council

The national development agency for the arts in England, distributing public money from Government and the National Lottery. Site includes information on grants (sometimes the Arts Council offer grants to authors) and how to apply for a Grant for the Arts, which are for individuals, arts organisations and other people who use the arts in their work. They are for activities carried out over a set period and which engage people in England in arts activities, and help artists and arts organisations in England carry out their work.

The Arts and Humanities Research Council

Provides funding and support in three programs: advanced research, training and post-graduate training. For successful applicants, full-funding (including maintenance living grant) of an arts-based MA and/ or PhD is possible.

HERO Higher Education & Research Opportunities in the UK
Includes a guide to organizations that fund and support high education in the UK.

The Society of Authors
Links to charitable trusts, prizes for fiction and non-fiction and for translation.

The Authors' Foundation
Gives grants to authors whose project is for a British publisher. Grants can be to help with research costs, or to buy time to write.

Grants for authors under the age of 40. Work must 'contribute to the greater understanding of existing social and economic organisation'. For fiction and non-fiction writers

Scottish Screen
The national development agency for the screen industries in Scotland; offers training grants and talent development funds.

The British Science Fiction Association

The British Academy is the chief source of funding for arts postgraduate courses

Creative Partnerships

Partners writers and other artists with schools and community groups to create and realise arts projects. Includes publishing ventures, writers-in residence and work at literary festivals.

Creative Skills

Continuing Professional Development agency for people working in the Creative Industries in Cornwall. Assists artists of all types, including poets, prose writers, screen writers, animators and playwrights with practical and business advice, needs assessment, networking opportunities, funding for professional development and mentoring schemes. There are also seminars and courses to help artists make the most of their professional lives. May fund 50 percent of the cost of a residential writing course.
